Information

Nutrition

Key Points
  • During pregnancy, your baby gets all the nutrients it needs from you. So you may need more nutrients during pregnancy than you did before pregnancy.
  • Taking prenatal vitamins and eating healthy foods can help give you all the nutrients you and your baby need during pregnancy.
  • Make sure your prenatal vitamin has folic acid, iron, and calcium in it.

Prenatal Vitamins
  • Prenatal vitamins are just multivitamins created for pregnant women with more of the nutrients that are beneficial to a health pregnancy.

What nutrients are the most important?
  • Folic Acid
    • A B-vitamin that every cell in the body needs for healthy growth and development. It can help prevent birth defects of the brain and the spine called neural tube defects.
  • Iron
    • A mineral that helps oxygen travel from the lungs to the rest of the body.
  • Calcium
    • A mineral that helps the baby's bones, teeth, heart, muscles, and nerves develop.
  • Vitamin D
    • Helps your body to absorb calcium and strengthens the immune system.
  • DHA
    • A fat that helps with the growth and development of the baby's eyes and brain.
  • Iodine
    • A mineral that allows your body to use energy from food.
